The house is in a small village called El Mojon on the Costa Calida.
The nearest beach is just 600 metres away and is a wonderful place for families with young children. The sea is safe and in the summer patrolled by lifeguards. There is a wonderful Chiringuito (wooden bar/cafe) right next to the beach, serving drinks and tapas, and a lovely outdoor children’s play area.
Several other beaches are just a stroll away – some more lively than others. One has inflatables in the sea for the children in the summer months.
Within walking distance of the house are a few bars and restaurants – mainly Spanish – serving tapas and larger menu items (inc paella).
If you want really lively this isn’t the place to be (although there is one bar which caters for the younger Spanish audience which has lives music some evenings)!
In our village of El Mojon there is a corner shop selling most provisions you could want, from food, to buckets and spades, although it is very Spanish. And their fresh meat and cheese is excellent.
About a mile away (in the slightly larger towns of Pilar de la Horradada and San Pedro del Pinatar) there are bigger, more traditional, supermarkets (inc Lidl) which stock everything you could possible want. And those two towns have many more restaurants and bars (inc Chinese and Indian if you prefer!). They are also good shopping centres, with everything you could want – from clothes to medicine!
Just along the coast from El Mojon (about a mile and a half stroll along the beach) is the pretty port town of Torre de la Horadada. Beautiful place with lovely shops, ice cream parlours, bars and restaurants. Really is worth a visit
Only a mile from the house you can access the Mar Menor. This is, in effect, a sea lagoon (seven miles across), where the sea is flat calm almost all of the time because it is separated from the Mediterranean sea by La Manga, a sandbar 22 km in length and with a width ranging from 100 to 1200 m. Two resorts on the Mar Menor close to us are Lo Pagan and Santiago de le Ribera. Beautiful and much more lively than El Mojon in the summer. Because of the “trapped” nature of the sea in the Mar Menor, the sea tends always to be about 4 degrees warmer than the Mediterranean (perfect in Spring and Autumn!).
If you want to keep fit (on holiday??) there is a huge and wonderfully equipped sports centre just a few hundred yards from the house. Only built in 2014. Has a great indoor swimming pool as well – and you can buy weekly or monthly membership at very good rates. It happens also to have a very good Mediterranean restaurant.
Car hire in the area is easy – and (except for the height of the summer) very cheap!
